MLGW News Release

MLGW quickly restores power to 40,000 customers following thunderstorm
April 2, 2024

This morning, a brief but intense line of thunderstorms impacted much of the Midwest causing many power outages in Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Memphis and Shelby County were also impacted by this storm system.

Lightning from the storm caused damage to an MLGW electric substation, in turn causing an outage on a high voltage transmission line which impacted two other substations. Power to approximately 40,000 MLGW customers was interrupted for just under two hours. MLGW crews worked quickly to restore power to the substations and the customers they serve by 11 a.m.

Throughout the remainder of the day, MLGW crews will work to restore power to the approximately 2,400 customers impacted by 44 smaller storm-related outages across our service area.

Customers can call 544-6500 to report an outage. General outage and storm preparedness information is available at mlgw.com/outagecenter.
