Gas Odor in the Air at Navy Road and Newport
September 23, 2021
Work to occur on Thursday, September 23
MLGW crews will perform routine maintenance on a gas main in the area of Navy Road and Newport starting at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 23. This planned work will require natural gas to be vented to the atmosphere for four hours.
The public in the surrounding areas may smell mercaptan in the air. This is the chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell so it can be easily detected.
MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 437,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
