Public may smell a sulfuric odor in the air

Memphis waste management service, Excel TSD, will perform routine maintenance involving mercaptan on Thursday, September 20, on President’s Island.

Mercaptan is a strong chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell. This is a routine planned maintenance and does not pose a threat to those in close proximity of the work locations, however the surrounding areas may smell a sulfuric odor in the air throughout the day.
