MLGW strengthens residency policy, reviews information on employee residency
May 14, 2008
On Thursday, May 15, the MLGW Board of Commissioners is expected to approve the minutes of the May 1, 2008 board meeting. As a result, a new residency policy will become effective immediately at MLGW. The new policy is intended to be a better reflection of the City of Memphis Residency Ordinance No. 5063, which requires that all City employees hired on or after January 3, 2005 live and maintain their residence within the City of Memphis.

The utility is reviewing information on all MLGW employees hired on or after the January 3, 2005 in order to identify those who may not be in compliance, according to MLGW's President and CEO Jerry Collins.

"Employees who may be in violation of the ordinance and/or policy will be contacted and given an opportunity to verify if they live in the City of Memphis," stated Collins. "Each case will be handled on an individual basis."

MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 420,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County. A 2007 survey of large metropolitan areas showed that MLGW has the sixth lowest combined rates in the nation.
