MLGW declares February 29, 2020 Plus-1 Day
February 25, 2020
Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division proclaims this year’s Leap Day as Plus-1 Day. The extra day in 2020 is a great time to encourage customers to sign up for Plus-1 and communicate the impact of this program.
Of the thousands of households who come to MIFA (Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association) each year seeking financial assistance in times of crisis, the organization is able to help about 30% with their utility bills, many of which are funded through Plus-1. Plus-1 is a stopgap measure for those in need, not an ongoing source of assistance. MLGW customers living in Shelby County are eligible to apply for assistance once every 24 months.
The program is funded by MLGW customers through one-time donations or recurring, monthly donations added to utility bills. MLGW collects donations; MIFA screens clients for eligibility and administers funds.
Of the 429,000 customers MLGW serves, fewer than 3% (roughly 12,300) contribute to Plus-1. Customers can donate through the MLGW My Account portal, by calling 544-6549, or online at mlgw.com/plus1.
