Public may smell a sulfuric odor in the air
MLGW will be performing routine maintenance at two locations today involving mercaptan: Ridgeway, just north of Bill Morris Pkwy that began around 8 a.m.; and Outland Rd, just north of E. Raines beginning around 10 a.m. Both projects could last up to two hours from their start times.
Mercaptan is a strong chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell. This is a routine planned maintenance and does not pose a threat to those in close proximity of the work locations, however the surrounding areas may smell a sulfuric odor in the air throughout the day.
MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 431,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County
