MLGW will be working on a gas main replacement job beginning at 6:30 am on Thursday, May 24, 2018. The work will take place in a general area just west of I-240 between the boundaries of Shady Grove and Quince.
This planned replacement work will require some natural gas to be vented into the atmosphere throughout the day. Traffic will not be affected by this work.
This controlled, temporary release of natural gas is not a result of any type of system failure and does not pose a threat to those in close proximity of the work locations. However, depending on the wind/weather conditions, residents and businesses close to these areas could smell a strong, sulfuric odor.
Mercaptan is a chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell so it can be easily detected.
MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 421,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
