MLGW to Perform Maintenance Involving Mercaptan
June 7, 2018

Public may smell a sulfuric odor in the air

MLGW will be performing routine maintenance involving mercaptan at a few natural gas facilities today, June 7, around 11 a.m.

The planned work areas are west of Airways Blvd, north of the TN/MS state line, east of Weaver Rd just south of Holmes, Germantown Parkway near Chimneyrock, and I-269 south of Highway 72.

Mercaptan is a strong chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell. This is a routine planned maintenance and does not pose a threat to those in close proximity of the work locations, however the surrounding areas may smell a sulfuric odor in the air throughout the day.

MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 431,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.
