Gas Odor in the Air on May 29
May 27, 2024

MLGW will perform routine maintenance involving mercaptan near Highway 269 and Highway 72, Airways Boulevard and Stateline Road and Stateline and Holmes Road on Wednesday, May 29.

This routine work will start at 8 a.m. and take two hours, at each point, to complete this work.

The public in the surrounding area may smell mercaptan in the air. Mercaptan is the chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell so it can be easily detected.

Depending on the wind/weather conditions, residents and businesses in the vicinity could smell this strong, sulfuric odor during the morning or from the odorant truck as it travels from each point.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving the residents of Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee since 1939. Deeply rooted in the community, its employees generously donate time and money in support of bettering the Greater Memphis area.
