MLGW has again received reports of scam attempts, targeted to Hispanic both residential and commercial customers. The customers are receiving calls in Spanish telling them that their utility payments are past due, and that their utility services will be cut off immediately unless they go out and buy gift cards and place specific sums of money on them.

In other instances the perpetrators tell the customer to wire money from a debit card to a money drop box (not MLGW's). Or they instruct the customer to go to a local pharmacy, buy a prepaid credit card and call them back to read off the numbers on the card over the phone. Other times they tell the customer they “will have an MLGW employee meet them at the business to collect the money.”

MLGW never comes to a business or residence to collect utility payments. Customers who believe they have been targeted or victimized with this or any other scam must immediately contact the Memphis Police Department at 901-454-2677.

MLGW reports that in just the last couple of days the company has received several calls related to this type of scam, all from commercial Hispanic customers. The person calling uses a cell phone with an out-of-state area code. 

MLGW is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving more than 421,000 customers in Memphis and Shelby County.

MLGW Advierte Sobre Nuevas Estafas Dirigidas a Clientes Hispanos Residenciales y Comerciales

MLGW ha recibido nuevamente reportes de intento de estafa, dirigidos a clientes comerciales y residenciales hispanos. Los clientes están recibiendo llamadas teléfonicas en español diciéndoles que sus pagos de servicio público están retrasados y que sus servicios serán suspendidos de inmediato a menos que salgan a comprar tarjetas de regalo y coloquen cifras específicas de dinero en las mismas.

En otros casos les dicen que realicen un giro con una tarjeta de débito hacia una caja de depósito (que no pertenece a MLGW). O que compren una tarjeta prepagada de crédito y les llamen de vuelta para leerles los números de la tarjeta. En otras ocasiones les dicen que acudirán al negocio para cobrar el dinero.

MLGW nunca visita residencias o negocios para recibir pagos de servicios públicos. Los clientes que crean que se les está tratando de perpetrar este tipo de estafa o que hayan sido víctimas, deben contactar de inmediato al Departamento de Policía de Memphis al 901-545-2677.

MLGW reporta que solo en los últimos días ha recibido varias llamadas relacionadas con este tipo de estafa, todas de clientes comerciales hispanos. La persona que llama lo hace desde un teléfono celular con código de área de fuera del estado.

MLGW es la mayor empresa de tres servicios públicos de energía en EE.UU., sirviendo más de 429.000 clientes en la Cuidad de Memphis y el Condado Shelby.
