MLGW News Release

Gas Odor in the Air Today and February 29
February 27, 2024

MLGW will perform routine maintenance today involving mercaptan near the intersection of North Germantown Parkway and Chimneyrock Blvd. Also, the same routine maintenance will be conducted near the intersection of Seward and Chulahoma roads on Thursday, February 29.

This routine work will last for two hours starting at 8:30 a.m. on both days.

The public in the surrounding area may smell mercaptan in the air. Mercaptan is the chemical odorant that MLGW adds to natural gas to give it the rotten egg/sulfur smell so it can be easily detected.

Depending on the wind/weather conditions, residents and businesses in the vicinity could smell this strong, sulfuric odor during the morning.

Memphis Light, Gas and Water is the largest three-service public power utility in the nation, serving the residents of Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee since 1939. MLGW consistently provides customers with rates that are amongst the lowest in the nation and stewards a water supply from artesian wells that is minimally treated. Actively engaged in promoting the prosperity of Memphis and Shelby County, MLGW supports the seven local chambers in its service area and makes doing business with local, minority- and women-owned business a priority. Deeply rooted in the community, its employees generously donate time and money in support of bettering the Greater Memphis area.
