New storm knocks out additional customers
July 3, 2023
(July 3, 2023, 11:30 a.m.) – Memphis Light, Gas and Water crews are working hard behind back-to-back storms. After restoring 121,400 customers, with 600 customers left to go before full restoration from June 25, another round of storms impacted 16,000 customers Sunday afternoon and overnight thunderstorms caused 35,000 outages at the peak. Collierville and Germantown appear to have taken the brunt of the impact from storms late night Sunday.
MLGW crews are working with a full complement of contract crews to restore service to everyone affected. Customers who have been without power since the June 25 storm remain a top priority, but crews are working all over the service area. Damage assessment is underway. Toppled trees which downed powerlines are the main culprit for outages.
“I don’t want customers to lose hope,” says MLGW President and CEO Doug McGowen. “It is going to get better; the system is going to be more resilient.” President McGowen added that MLGW’s Board of Commissioners approved a request for $200 million over five years to help get the utility back on a three-year tree trimming cycle. The Memphis City Council must approve next.
