Memphis Light, Gas and Water is working with its power supplier Tennessee Valley Authority to curb demand on the electrical grid during this exceptionally cold weather.
The wind chill tonight could get dangerously low, around 6° according to the National Weather Service. An extreme cold warning for Memphis and surrounding cities is expected to go into effect tonight and stay in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday.
To lessen the strain on the energy system, TVA and MLGW ask all customers to conserve energy use from 6 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 20 and 6 to 10 a.m. on Friday, February 21. Industrial, commercial and residential customers are asked to conserve energy during peak hours until further notice.
Voluntary conservation tips include turning your home’s thermostat down to 68° or less, unplugging electric vehicles, unplugging space heaters, and postponing the use of large appliances like clothes dryers and dishwashers.
