Memphis Light, Gas and Water is the largest three-service public utility in the nation. We are a Division of the City of Memphis. The President & CEO, who is appointed by the Mayor of Memphis, is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the utility.

A five-member Board of Commissioners oversees all budgetary requests greater than $250,000 and ensures that utility operations are run in the best interest of our stakeholders. The Board of Commissioners is appointed by the Mayor of Memphis for a three-year term.

The 13-member Memphis City Council is the rate-setting body for the utility. In addition, they approve the appointment of the President & CEO as well as the Board of Commissioners. The Council must also approve all budgetary items greater than $250,000.
